Open Design

Appropedia is a website for collaborative solutions in sustainability, poverty reduction and international development, with a particular focus on appropriate technology. Appropedia is a wiki-based website like Wikipedia, a website where a large number of participants are allowed to create and modify the content directly from their web browsers. Appropedia is a site for collaborative solutions in sustainability, poverty reduction and international development. It is an open website for users to co-create sustainable solutions, questions, and information; it serves as a resource area for other organizations

Virtual Organization for Innovative Conceptual Engineering Design (VOICED) is a virtual organization that promotes innovation in engineering design. This project is the collaborative work of researchers at five universities across the United States, and is funded by the National Science Foundation. The goal of this virtual organization is to facilitate the sharing of design information between often geographically dispersed engineers and designers through the use of a robust and sophisticated design repository. Additionally, functional data can be mapped to historical failure data[1] and possible components[2] to create a conceptual design.

Instructables is a website specializing in user-created and uploaded do-it-yourself projects, which other users can comment on and rate for quality. It was created by Eric Wilhelm, a mechanical engineer, and launched in August 2005. Instructables is dedicated to step-by-step collaboration among members to build a variety of projects. Users post instructions to their projects, usually accompanied by visual aids, and then interact through comment sections below each Instructable step as well in topic forums.

Potala Bracket Range

'A sand-cast aluminium bracket that enables DIY enthusiasts to make a range of furniture themselves. The bracket can produce beds, benches, tables, wardrobes and cupboards and can either be used as a short leg on its own or as a bracket to hold a longer wooden leg at an angle of five degrees.

The Potala Palace in Tibet was the chief residence of the Dalai Lama until he fled to India after the Chinese invasion in 1959. The palace is built with the walls angled at five degrees to help withstand earthquakes.'

wis design 'croquet'

'Perhaps stronger in terms of metaphor than innovation, but nonetheless a celebration of highly visible joinery, is young Swedish practice WIS Design's new 'Croquet' series, which consists of a bench, stool and barstool. Consisting of painted metal, the joints connect wooden (ash) sticks of different lengths, which are reminiscent of croquet mallets. The number of different components is kept to a minimum and the various pieces within the series are easy to assemble, requiring no specific tools.'

Elise Gabriel - 'The Zelfo Embrace'

'designer elise gabriel has collaborated with the green factory, to design 'the zelfo embrace' a series of furniture pieces which are constructed using the material zelfo.

zelfo is an ecological material made from 100 % recycled materials such as old paper, textiles etc or
rapidly renewable materials such as hemp, miscanthus, bamboo etc., which is free of synthetic binders or adhesives - it contains no toxic componentns. essentially any raw material with a high cellulose content can be used to produce zelfo.

elise gabriel and the green factory received the VIA partnership project 2010 award for
'the zelfo embrace' which gives designers the opportunity to develop projects in tandem
with a manufacturer, using innovative technologies and/or materials. the initiative aims
at encouraging exchanges of know-how and skills with an eye to experimenting
new solutions for furnishing and interior decorating.

Christof Schmidt - 'DaR'

'As part of his final year project at Kunsthochschule Kassel the young German designer Christof Schmidt developed this smart joining technique. The solid wooden elements of the chair are broken to measure and placed into a silicone-mould. Due to its expansion the poured in polyurethane foam infiltrates into every single wooden fibre at the breaking point and connects the pieces soundly. The foam hardens within minutes.'

Foldable Kitchen
'This is a semi-permanent kitchen for temporary housing or outdoor use. It consists of a foldable framework that is fixed once the sink part is put inside.'

Copper Lights
'The Copper Lights are a translation of the Copper Cabinet into more functional products. The bending and soldering techniques have been perfected, resulting in delicate but very useful lamps, which can be produced in series. The three different shapes make them suitable for different applications in the interior.'

Copper Cabinet
'The Copper Cabinet is a fragile cabinet for storing precious belongings. It is completely constructed out of 0,1 millimetre thick copper foil. The bends in the material give the structure its stiffness and almost a paper like appearance. You feel and see that the cabinet should be handled carefully, just like its contents.'
